The decision to allocate the majority of Benson 512 and 513 into office space was not a decision made by the Office of Student Life. They may now be on their way to occupying this space, but we should not direct any animosity that direction. As best as I can tell, this is all a part of University expansion and moving at large, but it is not unrelated to the Calloway school of business deciding to move out to the old I.S. building. As you may have noticed, the business school decided not to move, and this might have been the source of all this office moving. Again, do not direct any anger toward anyone on or off campus right now. This is all larger and more complex than I can understand. What is important now, what most of you have been doing, is making the case for Wake Radio’s need of the space we have. Beyond Wake Radio, though, this change is going to have the Howler, 3 to 4 Ounces, and The Student move into the same space on the 5th floor of Benson. As it stands, the Philomathesian doesn’t even have a space in Benson - they are in Polo. I’m not here to take media organization sides, but this situation is really rotten for certain organizations and not for others. That being said, the primary issue here is the institutional processes that were wholly absent from this decsion. Why media? If media can be pushed around, can anyone? What could we have done to stop this? I’m meeting with Ken Zick and David Clark on Monday, and I’ll be accompanied by out-going chair of the Media Board Anna Stokes. Homegirl gets stuff done. We spent today brainstorming on spaces that could potentially replace the 5th floor for the media organizations. I know nobody wants to hear that we might lose our space, but this is very very likely scenario. What needs to be done now is ensuring that our equipment will be handled well during this move, and we will have a comparable space elsewhere. This could be in a WFU owned house on Polo, in the old IS building, in a space in the Library or elsewhere. A lot is up in the air right now. I will have much much more information Monday night. Keep letters coming if you can, but please focus on your exams right now. Come Tuesday, we’ll know exactly what needs to be done. Above all, remember that we need to remain as professional and un-angry about this as we can. Nathan
Hello friends on the Internet. I have a situation. So this radio station I manage called Wake Radio (which you can stream at http://radio.wfu.edu) is fixin to be effectively shut down. Wake Forest’s Office of Student Life is allocating our lounge and office space to become general cubicle space for employees of Student Life. That means we are left with our tiny recording booth and already over-crowded vinyl closet. Yeah, we’re done. No more in-studios, nowhere to store CDs once the stacks are full, nowhere to put our audio equipment which means no more DJing around and off campus, no office or phone for our MDs, no space for any sort of events, no place for non-Greek students and fans of alternative music to have to themselves, etc etc etc. We’re pretty much just a dude a computer and a microphone if this happens. WHAT I NEED FROM YOU (and I know a lot of you guys were on staff at Wake Radio at one point) - get me a list of everyone who got a job in the industry due to involvement with Wake Radio, cause now that likelihood is seriously reduced as our operating capacity is seriously reduced. Further - if anyone has any alumni contacts, let them know about this. Send anything to <Bedsnh7@wfu.edu> Wake Radio is in a better position than it has been since I’ve been here, and I just can’t let an administrative circumstance like this make us forfeit all the strides we’ve made. We’re a nationally charting radio station with an international audience. The administration doesn’t realize what they are crippling with this taking of our space and resources. I know there’s only a handful of you out there that will appreciate this post - but please do all in your power to get this word out to the right people. They can’t take our station.
HEY GUYS. Please reblog this, listserve this or whatever to ensure that the sketch of the horned pegasus taking the demon deacon to slay a dragon atop wait chapel gets painted in our library. It’s just a sketch, BUT IMAGINE IT IN COLOR AND LARGE.
spread the word, vote for it. Show Carleigh some lovin.
Gentlemen, please click this link and vote for the drawing with the deacon riding the unicorn-pegasus to slay the dragon perched on Wait Chapel. Please. If it gets a lot of votes this gets painted in our library. Seriously. Also Carleigh drew it, so show her some love.
